    LOCATE
From the jumble of tapes, minidv’s, dvd’s and other kinds of stuff you have accumulated over the past few years, locate the ones you think might have some serious possibility of making it on your reel.
    label
IMPORTANT:
At this point, you should number every piece of media. These will be your Reel Numbers. Either use a felt tip pen, or use a sticky label to identify each piece. Write on the box or sleeve. (not the tape/dvd itself)

   list
Make a cursory first pass thru all your elements and jot down the scenes that you think have a chance. Of course you’re going to think that everything you’ve done is soooo great BUT, we have to realistic here. Be super critical because those who you’ll be sending your reel out to will definitely be super critical. So, if there are any doubts, put a big question mark and keep going.

Want to Save Money ?
Once you’re really sure that you have found the very best performances, it’s time to start logging. If you do a really good job of logging, you’ll save a lot of time and money later when editing.
In/Out - DVD & MiniDV: These are your start/stop times. Decide what part of the scene you want to start with and check the readout on your dvd player or minidv player. Note this either on a note pad with columns or on your computer. The closer it resembles the sample, the less time the edit will take. If you have a piece of paper with notes scratched out and all kinds of mess, it’s going to make the edit take much longer. Believe it.
In/Out - VHS:
VHS is a whole different beast. The only way you can get an accurate time on VHS is to wind the tape to the beginning, reset the counter to zero. REWIND again because often there is a memory which doesn’t allow it to go back to the beginning of the tape on the first rewind. Now you have a place to start.
Remember though, if you take the tape out of the machine at any time, the time readout is lost. You have to rewind it all the way to the beginning to find your place. it’s a pain but that’s why from now on you’ll only use DVD and MiniDV.
Description: Description can either be the dialog spoken or, if no dialog, just describe what is happening.
Role: Whatever part you played.
Reel: The numbers which you have already marked on all the media you gathered.
Order: If you’re pretty sure you know how this is all going to look, give each clip an order number. But, you don’t have to decide the order at this point. Often, what might seem like good order will not be at all, once you see the clips side by side.
OK !   You’re ready to get started. You’ll want to bring all your media and your best headshot with maybe a couple of others as backups.

And remember, “Editing is simple. You just have to be willing to kill your babies” - Anonymous
